Behind every great musician is a teacher who pushed them to greatness… This week on Classical KING we’re celebrating the hard work of teachers and the students they teach! To celebrate graduation season, we’ll be playing music about and from these unsung heroes all week.

Stories from the Silk Road

Host: Maggie Molloy 

This Saturday on Second Inversion: Stories from the Silk Road. Named for the trade routes that connected East and West, the Silkroad Ensemble has been bridging the cultural divide through music for over 25 years. We trace the trade routes on this week’s episode, with musical jewels from Mongolia, Taiwan, Iran, and beyond. 

 

Metropolitan Opera Broadcast 

Tchaikovsky: The Queen of Spades 

Saturday, May 31 | 10am 

A macabre thriller, this Saturday on the Met Opera stage! A desperate soldier tries to learn the secret to winning at cards in in Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades, live from New York City! 

 

The Score with Edmund Stone 

June Bugs 

Saturday, June 7 | 4pm 

This Saturday on The Score Edmund Stone is venturing into the under-rated super-heroes of the ecosystem, and some fun ones from cinema: bugs! Enjoy music from movies about the little creatures with a great big impact on our lives including A Bug’s Life, Antz, Alice in Wonderland, The Flight of the Butterfly and more. 

 

Deus Ex Machina 

Sunday, June 8 | 4pm 

It’s the cinematic trope that will not die: Deux Ex Machina.  Edmund Stone looks at some films that have used this device – for better or for worse – including Lord of the Rings, War of the Worlds, Avengers: Endgame, Matrix: Revolutions and more. 

 

Northwest Focus Concert Calendar 

Rainbow City Performing Arts: Action! 

Friday, June 6 at 7pm | Benaroya Hall, Seattle 

The finale of their “Lights, Camera, Action!” season, join Rainbow City Performing Arts for a performance including orchestra, wind ensemble, chorus, and jazz. This program features singer-songwriter Ryan Cassata and STANCE. 

Cascadian Chorale: Pick a Mass! 

Saturday, June 7 at 7:30pm | The Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross, Redmond 

Sunday, June 8 at 4:30pm | Congregational Church, Mercer Island 

Have you ever wanted to program a concert? The Cascadian Chorale is taking the unusual step of allowing their audience to choose their programming! After singing movements from ten different mass settings, the audience will be asked to vote on which complete masses will be performed next season. 

 

Lake Washington Symphony Orchestra: Celebrating Women 

Saturday, June 7 at 3pm | Bastyr University Chapel, Kenmore 

Lake Washington Symphony Orchestra concludes their season with a program of entirely women composers!
