Music Feature: Chinese Heritage

Through food, media, and culture the world today is connected on a global scale: you can say the same for classical music! This week we’re highlighting music featuring composers, performers, and conductors of Chinese heritage. Northwest Focus Live

Friday, May 16 | 7pm

Host: Maggie Malloy

Have you ever had to find strength despite adversity? This week on Northwest Focus Live, join Seattle Opera to hear the story of Kenzie, a fifth grade who must overcome her fears and realize she’s not alone after her life is turned upside down by homelessness. Earth to Kenzie is a one act opera, coming to the stage this Saturday, May 17 at the Mural Ampitheatre at Seattle Center.

Music of Remembrance: After Life

Sunday, May 18 | 4pm | Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall, Seattle

Join Music of Remembrance to experience the 10th anniversary of Tom Cipullo’s opera After Life. A work depicting a confrontation between the ghosts of Gertrude Stein and Pablo Picasso, After Life challenges us to interrogate the responsibility of artists in a troubled world.

 

Seattle Pro Musica: The World is Charged, with Cellist Nathan Chan

Friday, May 17 | 8pm | St. James Cathedral, Seattle

Seattle Pro Musica brings a new program featuring the sonorities of cello and the human voice, featuring Nathan Chan, the Assistant Principal Cello of the Seattle Symphony.

 

Artists at the Center: Seattle Opera Presents Earth to Kenzie

Saturday, May 17 | 1pm | Mural Ampitheatre, Seattle

Presenting their youth-opera, Seattle Opera will be popping-up on the Seattle Center campus to perform Earth to Kenzie. A one-act opera exploring themes of empathy and finding strength, Classical KING’s own Lisa Bergman will be there to kick off the performance!

Metropolitan Opera Broadcast

Saturday, May 17 | 10am

A new production of an ancient story, Richard Strauss’ Salome is on-air live from New York this Saturday. Set for the company’s first time in 20 years, Salome tells the biblical story of a young princess of Judea in Richard Strauss’ setting of Oscar Wilde’s scandal-plagued play.

 

The Score with Edmund Stone

A Fairy Ring

Saturday, May 17 | 4pm

Step into a magical realm this Saturday on the Score with Edmund Stone as he dares to venture into the mystical Land of Fairies. From the plucky Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream to a hockey player who becomes the Tooth Fairy, and dear Dobby in Harry Potter and the Deathly. Hallows, fairies take wing with Edmund on The Score.

 

Come on in, the Water’s Fine

Sunday, May 18 | 4pm

This Sunday Edmund Stone, creator, host and producer of The Score makes a splash with Come On In, The Water’s Fine – a show all about mermaids and mermen. This week it’s a trip to the the sea with music from The Little Mermaid, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, The Secret of Roan Inish and more musical “tails” this Sunday on The Score.

 

Second Inversion

Music for Meditation

Saturday, May 17 | 9pm

Host: Maggie Molloy

On this Saturday’s episode of Second Inversion: we’re listening to the birds! From mourning doves to evening vespers, we’ll hear music composed for an entire orchestra of birds. Plus—what a bunch of birds fluttering around the Georgia woods taught one composer about the nature of music.
