Gabriela Lena Frank: El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego

Composer Gabriela Lena Frank makes her Metropolitan Opera debut with El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego, a new opera inspired by the lives of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Set during the Day of the Dead, the story imagines Frida returning from the underworld to reunite with Diego one final time, blending mythology, memory, and magical realism. Drawing from Mexican musical traditions alongside contemporary orchestral writing, the opera creates a vivid world shaped by the artists’ lives and imagery. Isabel Leonard stars as Frida alongside Carlos Álvarez as Diego in this live Metropolitan Opera broadcast conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
