What happens when a choir works directly with the people writing the music? Concord Chamber Choir joins Northwest Focus Live for a program devoted to living composers, with a special focus on conductor-composer Giselle Wyers’ The Lips of the Sky. Wyers talks with Nikhil Sarma about her creative process and what it means to develop new music with a community choir, while Executive Director Lars Myren shares how Concord fits into Columbia Choirs’ larger network of ensembles across the Seattle area.

Bellingham Music Club presents pianist Milica Jelača Jovanović in two programs that move from Romantic favorites to contemporary voices. Hear music by Clara Schumann, Rachmaninoff, Liszt, Florence Price, and composers from Serbia and the Balkans, with Friday’s Night Beat concert expanding the program and adding piano four-hands selections with younger musicians.

A new Seattle piano trio launches its concert series with Beethoven at the center. Violinist Cecilia Archuleta, cellist Willie Braun, and pianist Michelle Huang pair Beethoven’s Piano Trio No. 1 with Clara Schumann’s Piano Trio in G minor, alongside shorter works by Max Richter and Barbara Heller for an intimate afternoon of chamber music in West Seattle.
Sunday, October 11 | 3pm | Christ Episcopal Church, Tacoma
What does loneliness sound like in America? The Esoterics present the world premiere of Rex Isenberg’s American solitude, a new choral work exploring isolation, individualism, and belonging through texts by writers including Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, T.S. Eliot, Claude McKay, and Dorothy Parker. The program moves through ideas of solitude and social change before turning toward connection, resilience, and the search for community.

Deal with the Devil

They say everyone has their price and in this Sunday’s Score episode Edmund Stone gives us a glimpse of what it costs to Deal with the Devil. From The Phantom of the Opera to The House of Usher and The Witches of Eastwick, it’s music and movies about characters that have driven a bargain with the devil. It just might make your moral compass spin.
Raven-ous for Poe

He’s the father of the mystery, American writer Edgar Allen Poe has sent chills down our spines for more than a century. Join Score creator and host Edmund Stone as he crafts a show filled with films based on Poe’s works including Masque of the Red Death, Stonehurst Asylum, The Pit and the Pendulum and more. This Sunday, we’re Raven-ous for Poe, on The Score.
