Second InversionReena Esmail is the featured composer in this week’s episode.
In a world that can sometimes feel divided by hate, the composer Reena Esmail encourages us to listen with love. Her new work This Love Between Us explores the intersections of her own multicultural heritage, combining elements of Hindustani classical music with the orchestral music of the West.
Each movement in This Love Between Us explores one of seven different religious traditions in India: Buddhism, Sikhism, Christianity, Zoroastrianism, Hinduism, Jainism, and Islam. The piece draws on texts that demonstrate how each of these traditions approaches the idea of unity, brotherhood, and being kind to one another.
In the spirit of unity, This Love Between Us features Western classical musicians and Indian classical musicians collaborating on the same stage. (You’ll hear the sitar and the tabla included in this orchestra!) As Reena Esmail writes, “Each of the musicians is asked to keep one hand firmly rooted in their own tradition and training, while reaching the other hand outward to greet another musical culture.”
To listen, tune in to Classical KING on Saturday, March 8 at 9pm PT.
